2020 Tour de Walter – Sir Walter Summer Camp 4-Miler

We’re now on to week 2 of 4 for the 2020 Tour de Walter, if you missed Week 1, the Merry Squirrel 3-Miler, the final results are here. Cumulative time will be calculated each week, as the Yellow Jersey is on the line!

All Tour de Walter events are free to attend and compete in.

Details for each weeks race will be release each Saturday at SirWalterRunning.com and via the Sir Walter Running Email List each Sunday night.

What is it? Every year we like to have a least one leg at Umstead Park. Here’s an area we haven’t touched yet; the Crabtree Entrance. North Raleigh and Durham Squirrels, rejoice!

Umstead makes Champions.

Why is it called the Sir Walter Summer Camp 4-Miler? This route runs primarily along Group Camp Road, which runs you towards Camp Lapihio and Camp Crabtree, and of course, back to the Reedy Creek M.U.T. All should be familar to those that have run the Umstead 100.

Where do I park? At the Umstead Park Visitors Center Parking Lot, located at 8801 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27617. You’ll have to drive a minute once you get in the  park, but you’ll see the Visitors Center on your right. There are bathrooms here as well.

Umstead Park Visitors Center

Where do I start? At the start of the wooden guardrail, across from the bottom of the parking lot. It has been spray-chalked.

Start and Finish at the end of the wooden guardrail, across from bottom of parking lot

Where do I turn once I’ve started? You’ll take the first left onto Maintenance Road, then a right once you get up the hill onto Group Camp Road. You’ll run that to the top, where you’ll take a right towards the Reedy Creek M.U.T., before turning around at the gate where the water fountain is, and running back the way you came.

Once you see this sign, you’ll take a left.
This is that first left that you will make onto Maintenance Road.
Run up the hill and take a right on Group Camp Road, where you will go onto the gravel.
Veer to the right (towards Reedy Creek) at the top of the big hill.
Run around the gate (counter-clockwise) and head back to where you started!

Where do I finish? Back where you started!

Around the last corner and back up the final hill to the finish (aka start)

What do I do after I finish? You’re close to Gizmo Brew Works, as well as the best burrito in Raleigh, the Bueno Burrito from Salsa Fresh! Want to know more about Umstead Park? Here’s a primer.

When can I run? Anytime between Monday, July 6th and midnight on Saturday, July 11th. Results will be posted Sunday, July 12.

Where will I see the standings? Below, and here (Make sure you filter accordingly). Also, if you haven’t already, visit the Sir Walter Running Strava Club page (make sure and join, so that your marks count).

Results are here

No GPS or Strava? You can email your results to [email protected]

Alternate segment – We know there are some GPS issues with the route, so we have a 2nd route (same as the first), that should pick up some more runners! https://www.strava.com/segments/24791592

What do I win? The 2 fastest Male and Female times this week will receive a Sir Walter Running Shirt of choice (no Tracksmith)! More awards will be announced soon!

Is there an overall competition? Of course? This series was spawned from our love of le Tour de France. Every second counts when you want to be donned in Yellow! Like Polka Dots? Be King of the Mountain on the first mile, or covet the Green jersey with a fast last mile. Under 25, go for the white jersey! It’s all in fun (and healthy competition)!

Week 1 Results are here and will be compiled as the 4-Week tour goes.
