2019 Summer of Miles series kicks off with sold out, inaugural Raleigh Half Marathon

February 1, 2019 – Raleigh, North Carolina – Sir Walter Running’s annual “Summer of Miles” series returns in 2019 with the inaugural Raleigh Half Marathon on Sunday, April 14th. The first year event is sold out, with a capacity of 750 runners. The Raleigh Half Marathon is held mostly on the Neuse River Greenway Trail, starting and finishing at Buffaloe Road Athletic Park. The event was created to fill the void left by the departure of the Rock ‘n’ Roll series, and will serve as the USATF North Carolina State Championship. Returning for a sixth year in 2019 is the Nash UNC Health Care Rocket Mile in downtown Rocky Mount. The event will take place on  Sunday, May 5th, and features separate Adult and Kids races, with the Adult Mens and Womens races serving at the USATF State Championship, and the Kids races serving as the USATF “Middle School State Championship,” a first time designation. The Pop Up Miles series returns again on Tuesdays in June. The popular, free Tuesday night series will be held at different tracks around the greater Raleigh area, with an over 5:30 and and under 5:30 mile each week, as well as a bonus individual event (5k, 400, 800) and a relay. The Championship will again take place at Meredith College on Tuesday, June 25th, with the Mens and Womens winners gaining a spot in the elite field of the 2019 Sir Walter Miler. The fourth Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile returns on Friday night, June 14th. The event will once again host a Mens and Womens Mile that starts at the top of Centennial Parkway, and ends near the back of the State Farmers Market, dropping 130 feet from start to finish. A post race party will again be held at Trophy Brewing Co. on Maywood Avenue. Registration is now open. More information can be found at RaleighRunDown.com

July will bring the return of the “Tour de Walter,” a free Strava Challenge series that pays tribute to Le Tour de France. Each week, runners will compete in a different course virtually for prizes, the King of the Mountain, and the Yellow Jersey, which is based on cumulative time. Finally, the Sir Walter Miler will return for its sixth running on its traditional First Friday spot in August of Friday, August 2nd at Meredith College. The 2018 event saw Charlene Lipsey take the win in the Women’s race (4:27.28) narrowly over Sara Vaughn (4:27.31), as both Women bested 4:30 for the first time. Cory McGee took third, following closely in 4:27.78. The Mens race saw a record thirteen American men run under the 4-minute barrier, highlighted by Multi-time Olympian Lopez Lomong’s meet record 3:53.86. Strava Challenge #10 – Raleigh Half Marathon Sampler

So you like Strava Challenges? We have another for you! If you haven’t already, join the Sir Walter Running Strava club! You can even go to SirWalterStrava.com and it will forward you to the right place. New here? Here’s a primer to Sir Walter Running Strava Challenges.

What is it? This is a celebration of the inaugural Raleigh Half Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019. This challenge will take you through the first half mile of the course, as well as the hardest quarter mile of the course, aka “Sir Walter’s Revenge,”  that falls around mile 12.5 of the actual course. Where do I park? At Buffaloe Road Athletic Park, located at5812 Buffaloe Rd, Raleigh, NC 27616. You can park right by the track.

Where do I start? On the main road, near the track. You’ll see a yellow ‘S’ on the street, right past the intersection after the track parking lot turn.

Where do I turn once I’ve started? The only major turn will be at the stop sign. During the race, you’d go right, and then left onto the Neuse River Greenway Trail. For this challenge, you’ll GO LEFT, towards the finish.

Where do I finish? Back where you started! Right before the crosswalk, you’ll want to use caution and turn left back onto the main road and finish at the ‘S.’

After the post, take a left back to the starting line. In the race, you would cross the street here and head towards the track.

When can I run? During park hours. In general parks are open from dawn to dusk everyday. Holiday hours can be found here. The challenge ends at dusk on December 31, 2018.

Where will I see the standings? Below (and here)! Also, if you haven’t already, visit the Sir Walter Running Strava Club page (make sure and join, so that your marks count).

What do I win? The fastest Men’s time and the Fastest Women’s time will net you a new Sir Walter Running T-Shirt. Also, the athlete (Male or Female) who completes the most loops in one run will get a T-Shirt as well!

2018 Sir Walter Running Giving Tuesday

For 5 years, Sir Walter Running has been putting on free and low cost running events for the Raleigh and North Carolina Running community. Our mission statement is to bring the Greater Raleigh running community together through innovation, activation, and inclusivity.

We couldn’t do this without your help.

In 2018, we took the plunge and became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit, with the goal of continuing what we started in 2013 with the Sandman Mile, for as long as possible.
