Tour de Walter

2021 Tour de Walter kicks of with the McNorth Hills Challenge

Coming hot on the heels of the 2021 Pop Up Miles series, the Tour de Walter enters its fourth season as the weekly virtual race series that happens each July. Unlike the Pop Up Miles series, the Tour de Walter will feature different distances, and terrains. Cumulative time will be calculated each week, as the Yellow Jersey is on the line! And new this year, there will be an in person option every Tuesday night at 7pm! We won’t be moderating, but feel free to meet up and race with your friends! Note: Please run at your own risk and be careful in the heat!

All Tour de Walter events are FREE to attend and compete in.

Each week, we will spray chalk the start and the finish lines. As long as you are running with GPS enabled device, or the Strava App, your time will start at the starting line and will finish (and register) at the finish line. We will keep full standings, that will update each Sunday. Competitors will have from Monday to Saturday to run the course of the week (as many times as they wish).

Details for each weeks race will be release each Saturday at SirWalterRunning.com and via the Sir Walter Running Email List each Sunday night.

2021 Schedule

What is it? With a little reverance to of our favorite races, that is taking place this week, The Bear, and a nod to Ronald McDonald, the McNorth Hills Challenge will get you started downhill, then onto the flats, with a BIG finish. It’s not running up Grandfather Mountain, but it’s not Wake Med Soccer Park either! The distance is approximately 2 2/3 miles.

Why is it called the McNorth Hills Challenge? Because you’ll start at North Hills Park and will run by McDonalds before turning around.

Where do I park? You can park at North Hills Park (in the back), which is located at 100 Chowan Circle, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Where do I start? At the Crabtree Creek Trail sign at the back of the North Hills Park parking lot. You will finish here as well. The Strava route is here.

Start at the Crabtree Creek Trail sign (and finish here too)

Where do I turn once I’ve started? There are only 2 turns on the course. The first is at the bridge. Take a left after crossing it (and a right onto it on the way back). The second is at the bollard after you pass McDonalds, before you cross the street. There are no street crossings!

Turn left after crossing the bridge
Go around the bollard and head back towards the start, which is also the finish. This is about a tenth of a mile after you pass McDonalds on your left.

Where do I finish? Back where you started!

What do I do after I finish? Check out the local wildlife!

Do not fear the deer

When can I run? Anytime between now and midnight on Saturday, July 10th. Results will be posted Sunday, July 11. And new this year, there will be an in person option every Tuesday night at 7pm!

Where will I see the standings? Below, and here (Make sure you filter accordingly). Also, if you haven’t already, visit the Sir Walter Running Strava Club page (make sure and join, so that your marks count).

What do I win? The 2 fastest Male and Female times this week will receive a Sir Walter Running Shirt of choice (no Tracksmith)! More awards will be announced soon!

Is there an overall competition? Of course? This series was spawned from our love of le Tour de France. Every second counts when you want to be donned in Yellow! Like Polka Dots? Be King of the Mountain on the first mile, or covet the Green jersey with a fast last mile. Under 25, go for the white jersey! It’s all in fun (and healthy competition)!
