We’ll talk about these Strava Challenges of upcoming episodes of the Summer of Miles podcast, so make sure and subscribe!

2023 Tour de Walter – Stage 2: Simms Branch Half

What is it? We’re heading to north Raleigh for a short and sweet, and slightly downhill half mile on the Simms Branch Trail (greenway). You’ll run from the 1.5 mile mark to the 1 mile mark!

Want to run with friends? Feel free to meet up Tuesdays at 7pm, just like the Pop Up Miles. No official start, so bring your own whistle!

Where is it? On the Simms Branch Trail near Durant Road Middle School. A few parking options are 9416 Cub Trl, Raleigh, NC 27615, 3000 Hiking Trl, Raleigh, NC 27615, 8555 Camp Durant Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615, 10401 Durant Rd., Raleigh, NC 27614, or at the school during off hours.

The Simms Branch Trail is 1.7 miles long.

Where is the start (and where do I run)? You start at the 1.5 mile mark of the Simms Branch Trail and will cross a bridge around 0.1 miles in. It can be slick, so be careful.

The 1 1/2 mile mark is the start of the segment
The bridge can be slick after rain, so I’d stay to the left side before coming off it to the right

Where do I finish? At the 1 mile mark right before you hit the street!

That brown marker on the left is the finish
The actual finish line

When should I run? The segment is fully shaded, but it’s been hot lately, so plan accordingly.

Where will I see the standings? See below and filter accordingly. And we’ll update the cumulative weekly!

Tag Sir Walter Running in your Strava comments so we know you meant to complete the segement (and weren’t just out for a jog)!

Update your Privacy Settings! If you want your run to register, you must go into your run in Strava after it populates and adjust the privacy settings on that run (to not hide the start and finish).

What do I win? We will have a random drawing for 2 Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile entries!

What exactly is the Tour de Walter? Yes. This is the first of a 4 segment Challenge called the Tour de Walter, in honor of the Tour de France. Everyone that competes all 4 segments will get a Tour de Walter koozie, and the Male and Female with the lowest overall time will get VIP seating at the 2023 Sir Walter Miler.
