Tour de Walter

2023 Tour de Walter kicks off with the Alleghany 1000

So you like Strava Challenges? We have another for you! If you haven’t already, join the Sir Walter Running Strava club!

The 2023 Pop Up Miles Season is over and the Tour de Walter has just begun! We’ll announce a new challenge every Monday (or maybe Sunday night), and it will run through the following Saturday at Midnight. All of these are in celebration of the 2023 Sir Walter Miler, which will be held Friday, August 4th, back at Meredith. We’ll talk about these Strava Challenges of upcoming episodes of the Summer of Miles podcast, so make sure and subscribe!

2023 Tour de Walter – Stage 1: Alleghany 1000

What is it? A short and sweet 1000 meter triangular loop that will mimic the rolling nature of the Tour de France!

Want to run with friends? Feel free to meet up Tuesdays at 7pm, just like the Pop Up Miles. No official start, so bring your own whistle!

Where is it? The start is at the corner of Alleghany Drive and Yadkin Drive. To set your GPS to the start, put in 3500 Alleghany Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609. You can park on the side of the road or at the graphic parking pads by the Crabtree Creek Greenway trailhead.

Where is the start (and where do I run)? You start right at the stop sign (the back of it) and run straight up Alleghany. There will be the bend in the road to the left and the road turns into Alamance drive at around .25 miles. At about .45 miles, you will turn left onto Yadkin Drive and head towards the finish. When you see that first manhole, you’re right around 800 meters (and have 200m to go)!

When you see this manhole, you’re about 800m in and have 200m to go!

Where do I finish? Back where you started!

When should I run? We recommend Sunrise or Sunset, as it can be tough in the heat. Be careful! Make sure and run on the left side of the road, facing traffic. You can run anytime between now and nightfall on Saturday, July 8. Feel free to run as many times as you want.

Where will I see the standings? See below and filter accordingly. And we’ll update the cumulative weekly!

Update your Privacy Settings! If you want your run to register, you must go into your run in Strava after it populates and adjust the privacy settings on that run (to not hide the start and finish).

What do I win? We will have a random drawing for 2 Sir Walter shirts! Learn more about them below and check out the available colors and sizes in the Sir Walter Merch store.

What exactly is the Tour de Walter? Yes. This is the first of a 4 segment Challenge called the Tour de Walter, in honor of the Tour de France. Everyone that competes all 4 segments will get a Tour de Walter koozie, and the Male and Female with the lowest overall time will get VIP seating at the 2023 Sir Walter Miler.
