Tuesday, June 4, 2019 – Raleigh, North Carolina – The fifth season of Sir Walter Running’s Pop Up Miles series kicks off tonight with a “road trip” to Durham, where the first event on the schedule will take place at Durham Academy. Week 2 (6/11) will be held at Ravenscroft School, Week 3 (6/18) at Athens Drive Magnet High School, and the Championship Miles (6/28) will be held at Meredith College, home of the Sir Walter Miler.
Each week, there are two, one mile races. The first is for those predicting to run 5:30 and up, the second is for under 5:29. There is a bonus distance, and a relay each week. In week one, there will be a 5000 meters, and a 4×400 meter relay.
The Championship Miles, which will be held on Friday, June 28 will feature the Top 10 Men and the Top 10 Women from the first 3 weeks, and an Open Mile. The Top 10 times will be compiled through the first three weeks of the Pop Up Miles. Men can automatically qualify with a Sub-3:50 1500 meters or Sub-4:10 track mile. Women can auto qualify with a sub 5:00 1500m or sub 5:20 mile. Marks must be from 1/1/2019 or after.
Midway through the Pop Up Miles series is the 4th Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile, a unique event that showcases the fastest mile in North Carolina. Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female finishers also gain automatic entry to the Pop Up Miles – Championship Miles.
The Winners of the Pop Up Miles Men’s Championship and Women’s Championship Race will earn the final spot in the Sir Walter Miler Elite Race on Friday, August 2, 2019.
Pop Up Miles are directed and promoted by Sir Walter Running, a Raleigh-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to “bring the Greater Raleigh running community together through innovation, activation, and inclusivity.” Sir Walter Running is a USATF club that also produces the Sir Walter Miler, the Raleigh Half Marathon, the Raleigh RunDown Downhill Mile, Pop Up Cross Country at Dix Park, a series of Strava Challenges, including the Tour de Walter, and the Summer of Miles podcast.
