2024 Tour de Walter Week 4 – Shelley Longstreet

So you like Strava Challenges? We have another for you! If you haven’t already, join the Sir Walter Running Strava club!

The 2024 Tour de Walter is off and running! We’ll announce a new challenge every Monday (or maybe Sunday night), and it will run through the following Saturday at Midnight. All of these are in celebration of the 2024 Sir Walter Miler, which will be held Friday, August 2nd at Meredith. We’ll talk about these Strava Challenges of upcoming episodes of the Summer of Miles podcast, so make sure and subscribe!

What exactly is the Tour de Walter? This is the fourth of a 4 segment Challenge called the Tour de Walter, in honor of the Tour de France. Everyone that competes all 4 segments will get a Tour de Walter koozie, and the Male and Female with the lowest overall time will get VIP seating at the 2024 Sir Walter Miler.

NOTE: These runs are unsupervised, so please run at your own risk (and be careful)!

2024 Tour de Walter – Stage 4: Shelley Longstreet

What is it? The final segment of le Tour de France is mostly ceremonial, but the sprinters still want to win. And this year, le Tour ends on a time trial, which seems fitting here. You’ll basically run from the back side of Shelley Lake to the Longstreet Drive trailhead, and back.

Where is it? The run starts on the Seratoma Arts Center side of Shelley Lake Park. You can point your GPS to 1400 W Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, NC 27612 and park in the parking lot, which is right near the start of the segment.

Where is the start (and where do I run)? Walk down the hill maybe 100 yards tops and you’ll see the yellow bollard with the big rocks. Start (and finish) there. At the bottom of the hill when you hit Shelley Lake, take a left over the wooden bridge. From there, just stay straight and go through the tunnel and then to the trailhead at Longstreet Drive, where you’ll run around the middle bollard and head back the way you came! Note: It can be a little slick in the first and last half mile (with mud).

Walk down the hill about 50 yards or so and start (and finish) at the yellow bollard by the big rocks.
Once you make it down the hill to the lake, take a LEFT over the wooden bridge
Don’t turn onto the lake. Stay straight and you’ll go through the tunnel.
The turnaround point is the middle bollard right before you get to Longstreet Drive at ~1.8 miles.
When you cross the bridge, make sure and take a RIGHT up the final hill to the finish at the bollard by the big rocks!

Where do I finish? At the same place you started. The bollard by the big rocks.

When should I run? The segment is shady, but it’s been hot lately, so plan accordingly. Don’t run in the middle of the day. Be careful. Take some Maurten or LMNT in advance! You have between now and Saturday at midnight.

Where will I see the standings? See below and filter accordingly. And we’ll update the cumulative weekly!

Tag Sir Walter Running in your Strava comments so we know you meant to complete the segment (and weren’t just out for a jog)!

Update your Privacy Settings! If you want your run to register, you must go into your run in Strava after it populates and adjust the privacy settings on that run (to not hide the start and finish).
