2024 Tour de Walter Week 3 – Lake Drive Tourmalet 2k

So you like Strava Challenges? We have another for you! If you haven’t already, join the Sir Walter Running Strava club!

The 2024 Tour de Walter is off and running! We’ll announce a new challenge every Monday (or maybe Sunday night), and it will run through the following Saturday at Midnight. All of these are in celebration of the 2024 Sir Walter Miler, which will be held Friday, August 2nd at Meredith. We’ll talk about these Strava Challenges of upcoming episodes of the Summer of Miles podcast, so make sure and subscribe!

What exactly is the Tour de Walter? This is the third of a 4 segment Challenge called the Tour de Walter, in honor of the Tour de France. Everyone that competes all 4 segments will get a Tour de Walter koozie, and the Male and Female with the lowest overall time will get VIP seating at the 2024 Sir Walter Miler.

NOTE: These runs are unsupervised, so please run at your own risk (and be careful)!

2024 Tour de Walter – Stage 3: Lake Drive Tourmalet 2k

What is it? In honor of the Tourmalet climb from le Tour de France, we have a short and sweet one that bites. You’ll head down the first half, and then come up slowly, and then much more steeply over the final half mile or so. Be careful!

Where is it? Park somewhere near the corner of Lake Drive and St. Marys Street.

The starting area (corner of St. Marys and Lake)

Where is the start (and where do I run)? Start at the stop sign line on the corner of Lake Drive and St. Marys. You’ll start heading downhill and will stay straight on Lake until making a brief turn onto White Oak before heading back up Lake and to the finish where you started.

Start at the Stop Sign line at Lake Drive (on the corner of St. Marys)
Stay Straight on Lake (and always run against traffic)
At the bottom of Lake Drive, take a left on White Oak (before another left back onto Lake)
Then take another left back onto Lake, and start going back up.
Stay right back onto Lake and head up to the finish (this part hurts).

Where do I finish? At the same place you started. The Stop Sign line.

When should I run? The segment has some shade, but it’s been hot lately, so plan accordingly. Don’t run in the middle of the day. Be careful. Take some Maurten or LMNT in advance! You have between now and Saturday at midnight.

Where will I see the standings? See below and filter accordingly. And we’ll update the cumulative weekly!

Tag Sir Walter Running in your Strava comments so we know you meant to complete the segment (and weren’t just out for a jog)!

Update your Privacy Settings! If you want your run to register, you must go into your run in Strava after it populates and adjust the privacy settings on that run (to not hide the start and finish).

What do I win? We will have a random drawing for 2 entries to the Raleigh Holiday Half Marathon on Saturday, December 7th!
