Strava Challenge – 8 for Kay

While being a non-profit ourselves, Sir Walter Running loves to give back to the community! The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has been a long time partner of the Sir Walter Miler, and we hope you’ll join us for a fun virtual run this February; not a race, but a true (Strava) challenge!

*And make sure to join our Strava Club at SirWalterStrava.com (or search Sir Walter Running in Strava)

What is it? Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting innovative ways of fighting ALL cancers affecting women and providing support through giving strength, courage, and hope. This is a cause that we all have been affected by. We’ll be doing this Strava Challenge as a part of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund 2021 Celebration Run/Walk. Make sure and sign up and join our team: SWR Squirrel Squad!

For this challenge, you’ll be running around 8.5 miles from NC State to the PNC Center / Carter-Finley Stadium, and back! As runners, the pinnacle we could reach is an Olympic medal. Did you know that Kay Yow was the Head Coach of the Team USA Women’s Basketball Teams at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games that won GOLD in both Olympiads? That’s 8 years of World dominance, so we’ll run a mile for each!

Note: You can run/walk ANY distance by joining our team. This is just a fun run to challenge you!

Where do I park? There is street parking on Morrill Drive that is available early morning, after 5pm, and on weekends. Otherwise, you can park in the public deck across from Paul Derr Track. Otherwise you can park close by and jog over!

State to Stadium to Statue = ~8.5 miles of fun for 8 years of World Dominance!

Where do I start? At the corner of Cates and Morrill, right across from Reynolds Coliseum, just down from the Kay Yow statue. You will run about 100 yards before turning right onto the greenway.

Start here heading on Morrill in the direction of Western Blvd (in the opposite direction of campus)

Where do I turn once I’ve started? You’ll make a hard right just after starting onto the Rocky Branch Greenway and head towards the fairgrounds.

Take a hard right here and head towards the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center (not into the tunnel)!
The Greenway runs along Sullivan, and then you will cross Gorman and stay straight onto Ligon
You will take a right onto Method off Ligon
You will take a left onto Beryl off Method
You will take a right onto Blue Ridge off of Beryl. You will cross the railroad tracks and Hillsborough Street. Please be safe here and try to stay on the left side of the road. This is not a race!
You will take a left onto Trinity here off of Blue Ridge.
Take a right onto Karmanos Drive. There is no sign here. So take a right when you see GATE B.
Stay straight on Karmanos Drive completing the horseshoe of the PNC Center. When you see Backyard Bistro, go left back onto Trinity and head back towards Blue Ridge and finish the same way you came.

If you want to download the Strava route to your phone/watch, here’s the link: https://www.strava.com/routes/2794030424587756944 (and although this is not a race, here is the segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/27252910)

*Note: You will be on open roads on some parts of this challenge. Please be aware of your surroundings and run at your own risk.

Where do I finish? Back where you started!

Finish by the bricks at the crosswalk!

What do I do after I run? Walk up the steps beside Reynolds and go see the “Coaches Corner” Garden!

Learn more about the Kay Yow statue in the “Coaches Garden” by Reynolds Coliseum here.

When can I run? Anytime between now and Saturday, February 27th as we’ll be doing this challenge in conjunction with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Run/Walk! (Register here and join our team SWR Squirrel Squad)!

Or please Venmo @SirWalterMiler $8 anytime you run the loop and we’ll donate it directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund! Whether you run it this month or 5 years from now, let’s contribute to this great cause! Take a selfie on the route (or in the Coaches Garden) and tag us and we’ll match the $8 every time you run!

What do I win? This is not a race, but we’ll raffle off 2 VIP tickets to the 2021 Sir Walter Miler! Anyone that completes the challenge by midnight on February 27th will be eligible.
